Short portfolio description
X StepO is a speculative prosthetic mobility concept exploring how assistive products could combine performance, personal expression and circular material thinking.
Inspired by my father's work in engineering and prosthetic development, the project reimagines the prosthetic limb not only as a medical necessity, but as a product people could feel confident wearing combining futuristic aesthetics, comfort and a proposed material strategy based around recycled, bio-based and lower-impact components.
Prosthetic limbs are primarily designed around an essential requirement:
restore mobility.
But mobility products also become part of someone's body, appearance and everyday identity.
X StepO began by asking:
What if prosthetic design considered expression, sustainability and desirability alongside function?
The project explores a future prosthetic concept positioned somewhere between medical engineering, industrial design and fashion.
Rather than treating the artificial limb as something that should visually disappear, X StepO imagines a prosthetic that could deliberately become part of someone's personal style.
The concept combines sculptural forms, metallic and organic visual references, interchangeable aesthetic possibilities and a proposed sustainability strategy incorporating recycled materials, natural fabrics, bio-based components and lower-impact alternatives.
The result was not intended as a finished medical device, but as an exploration of how the experience and business model around prosthetics could evolve.
The Design Opportunity
Traditional prosthetic development understandably prioritises:
function
safety
comfort
durability
mobility
But once those fundamental needs are met, another design opportunity emerges:
How should a prosthetic make someone feel?
X StepO explores additional dimensions such as:
personal expression
aesthetics
customisation
material responsibility
emotional attachment
confidence
fashion compatibility
The central idea became:
Assistive products do not have to look purely assistive.
They can become objects of identity.
